This teacher training offers students in-depth skills to explore Yoga as a vehicle for holistic health, self-transformation, and personal empowerment.

Our curriculum includes a unique blend of alignment-based vinyasa flow, a solid foundation in Hatha Yoga, and 200 hours of instruction offered within a therapeutic framework.

The instruction will cover a wide range of Yoga techniques including yoga postures, yoga anatomy, relaxation, breath awareness, pranayama, meditations to calm the mind, contemplations to transform limiting tendencies into life-affirming thought patterns, and the application of clear, anatomy-informed principles of alignment to create safety, balance, and freedom in Yoga poses.

Students explore yoga's ancient knowledge and concepts from yogic philosophy including Ayurveda, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, and the Chakra System as frameworks for the application of Yoga as a journey towards radiant health and well-being.

The physical practice emphasis includes hatha and vinyasa yoga offered through a lens of biomechanically sound and anatomy-informed alignment. Expect both mindful vinyasa flow sequencing as well as gentler and restorative variations. You will practice physical postures from all categories of poses including standing poses, hip openers, forward bends, backward bends, twists, inversions, balancing, supine, seated, and prone.

Variations for all levels of practitioners will be provided in yoga practice, all abilities and ALL bodies are welcome to attend.

Rather than offer standard sequencing or rigid methodologies, students are exposed to frameworks that inspire each yoga teacher to adopt the practices, awaken their creativity, and find their own authentic voice as a teacher.

Graduates of this program feel empowered to teach a variety of yoga class types, including all levels vinyasa flow yoga, alignment-based classes, yoga foundations, senior, gentle, and restorative.

Surrounded by natural beauty, it offers two yoga studios, a deck with unparalleled views, and a lovely indoor space with wood floors and windows on all sides. There are two pools on the property, oceanside cabinas, a magical beach for morning yoga, and delicious, healthy food. The retreat itself is located on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica and has been identified as one of the five blue zones on the planet.  Costa Rica offers endless adventures, beautiful beaches, diverse wildlife, and opportunities for wildly wonderful experiences.

This magical property recently changed ownership and changed its name from Zen Spirit to Salvatierra. The name Salvatierra is both a reminder to us all to do what we can to save our beloved Mother Earth and an invitation to step into a place of refuge and reconnect with our truest, most blissful nature.

Located away from the popular hustle and bustle of tourist beaches, Salvatierra guarantees their guests a true retreat experience for living the yogic lifestyle and the possibility of immersing in unspoiled oceanside beauty. There are no hotels or facilities other than private residences on Costa de Oro beach and the premise is set on a wonderful long flat gold sandy beach interrupted by river estuaries. You can enjoy world-class surfing as well as kayaking and bird watching in the mangrove, horseback riding and hiking to waterfalls, star gazing into the dark sky and much more. In short, it is a nature lovers paradise and the perfect location for a deep immersion into yoga away from the distractions of our busy world.

If you're considering yoga teacher training, you'll be hard pressed to find a better program than Soma. The yoga instructor team was incredibly knowledgeable, passionate and enthusiastic about everything they taught. I attended the intensive in Costa Rica, and the way it was structured fostered an immediate sense of camaraderie among what was an otherwise diverse group of people. I left the experience feeling qualified and capable of teaching yoga, and excited to begin to do just that. I plan to return to the Soma Yoga Institute for my 300 hour teacher training when I'm able. - Chase Adams, Costa Rica Teacher Training Graduate

Since discovering yoga more than 20 years ago, Molly has studied with some of the world’s most renowned instructors most notably the founder of Smart Flow Yoga, Annie Carpenter, Chuck Miller, Maty Ezraty and Don Stapelton from Nosara Yoga Institute. She credits Annie for giving her the skills to teach intentional alignment and sequencing, Don for the ability to encourage self-inquiry and Chuck for finding the unity in all things. For the past seven years, Molly has also been the owner and director of Yoga Centered Studio on the Big Island of Hawaii. In addition, she leads workshops, retreats and teacher trainings all over Hawaii.

Ultimately Molly considers herself a student of life. She is constantly drawing inspiration from the world around her, and most recently the newest addition to her family, her son, Reef. Her hope is to inspire others to share the practices of yoga that have so positively impacted her life.

“The yoga mat is a microcosm for who you are,” says Molly. “It’s not about how good you are at handstands or how flexible you are, it’s about how you approach life. Yoga reveals this and so much more. It’s about discovering who we are and finding acceptance right then and there in that very moment.”

Molly is an amazing yoga teacher and a beautiful soul to be around and learn from. Molly's inspiring spirit really shines through in her teaching. She is extremely knowledgeable about alignment, anatomy, and how to use yoga as a method for healing and/or optimal health. She is fun and encouraging. I absolutely love Molly and her asana classes are the best ones I've ever had the privilege of taking. The yoga Molly practices and shares with others will lift your body, mind, and spirit to a greater place! - Jensi Gise

Her first initiation into yoga was through Kripalu, and it gratefully changed the course of her life in her formative teen years. Yoga provided balance, self discovery, and restoration throughout her academic years in college as she completed studies in Environmental Education and Dance.

A nomad at heart, Jess has led teacher trainings, retreats, workshops and classes worldwide for 17 years since her first class to a group of women in Mongolia while living in the Peace Corps.

Jess’s classes are soaked in yoga's rich philosophy and paletted history, mindful alignment and thoughtful sequencing, inspired by her own never-ending search for play and creativity. She enjoys teaching a vast diversity of yogic styles from Therapeutic, Restorative and Chair Yoga, to Partner and Aerial Hammock Yoga; but gets extra lit up highlighting Vinyasa Flow’s fluid diversity with a multi level approach. She finds joy in making yoga accessible to all with creative use of props and adaptations for beginners, injuries, body types, and pregnancy; instilling an inclusive environment for the practice of yoga. Her mantra is, “move like yourself” and encourages students to find their own inner teacher with the foundation of guiding principles.

Jess infuses classes with mantras on harmonium to find voice, hand mudras, breath pranayama, as well as insightful themes and intentions to shake out routine and invite people back home to their bodies. She is interested in balancing the architecture of alignment with the grace and freedom found in flow. As a teacher she inspires her students to use yoga as a gateway to better understand oneself, accept and even celebrate our humanness, and to seek wonder in the cracks where the light tries to find us.

Jess has been blessed to study with many phenomenal yogis during her travels including Dana Trixie Flynn, Sri Dharma Mittra, Carrie Owerko, Jillian Pransky, Suzanne Sterling, Chrissy Carter, Elena Brower, Cyndi Lee, Eoin Finn, and Desiree Rumbaugh; a few of many whom she’s incredibly grateful for passing on their knowledge, inspiration, and innate wisdom. As a physical therapist for 20 years, I am so impressed by the attention to biomechanical alignment, yoga anatomy, and the safe, therapeutic approach of this training. The course significantly added so much to my PT framework and I will be a more effective PT because of this course. On a personal note, I am inspired to develop a consistent yoga practice and teach. This was overall a beautifully balanced course in content, instructors, activity vs downtime, fun vs academics, and philosophy. It was supportively and encouragingly designed and executed, while being reasonably challenging to help us to grow. I will absolutely recommend this yoga teacher training and return again. - Yvette Albright, Costa Rica Teacher Training Graduate

"Not only am I walking away from this yoga training prepared to teach many different classes, but I now see life through a brighter and more vibrant lens. I feel empowered to express myself unapologetically in an authentic way. The location in Costa Rica was a tropical paradise, and the schedule and classes were so beautifully cohesive. I recommend Soma Yoga Institute to others a million times over and can't wait to return for my 300-hour teacher training."

-Brooke Langston, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"This was an experience of a lifetime, and I loved it all. When I arrived the ease into the classes and course material was great. We started from the basics and worked our way into understanding why yoga is so complimentary to everyday life. I learned a lot with the alignment component and now understand my body through these many hours of practice. I’m forever grateful to the teachers for the impact they have made in my life. Through this immersion, I came into an inner peace that I have been seeking."

-Shezelle Weeks, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"Soma Yoga Institute YTT is top-notch. They know how to inspire, educate, and prepare yogis to teach. I came in with two goals: to learn alignment and to become more confident as a teacher and both were met. My understanding of yoga has increased as a result of learning to sequence creatively, weaving themes and intentions, diving into the Sutras of Patanjali, chanting, chakras, koshas, and so much more. I wholeheartedly recommend Soma Yoga Institute to anyone looking to experience a 200-hour teacher training. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect location to immerse yourself in both the beauty of Costa Rica and the knowledge and support by Liz and Peggy. This YTT program is a 10/10!"

-Catherine Lewis, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"This was an incredible and transformative experience with knowledgeable, kind and supportive instructors. Thought and care has been put into every aspect of the curriculum, giving a great foundation to begin a career as a yoga teacher. This is complimented by the magical environment of Salvatierra in Costa Rica which helped facilitate an open, productive and concentrated learning experience, as well as strong collaboration between students."

-Mohammad Zahid, Costa Rica Yoga Training Graduate

"I enjoyed Liz‘s wisdom and compassion and Jess’s fire, grace, and generosity. I enjoyed challenging myself to go beyond my comfort zone in a loving supportive environment. I loved the setting, the food, the accommodations, the animals, the birds, and the waves. I learned so much about alignment and engagement which will be so beneficial to me and my students. I learned to appreciate yoga philosophy and draw parallels between Buddhism and yoga. I sharpened my hunger for a daily practice and for more community to practice with. The chanting with the harmonium was magical, I loved the silent mornings, the sutra presentations, practicum, and getting to see everybody shine!"

-Sarah Wisby, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"For me, this training was a 10 of 10. The curriculum was a well balanced mixture of both practice and theory. I like the therapeutic approach, putting the needs of individual bodies at the center and not emphasizing, showing off or fancy posing. I’m very impressed by the teachers' knowledge, the community we created, and the attention to detail. One could really tell that Soma Yoga Institute puts their students in the center. I learned how to build a solid foundation in my yoga poses. It changed the way I practice every pose now. The alignment queues are a game changer. Meditation helped me to find clarity for my next steps in life. Overall this 200 Hour YTT was truly transformative. I did not expect that."

-Fabienne Schatter, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"Soma Yoga Institute's 200 Hour Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica was exceptional.  I really enjoyed the holistic teaching, the variation of activities and the diverse yoga topics we covered. It was great to have lectures, practice, group discussion, exercise, homework, and presentations—the variety was perfect, fun and compelling—from breath to poses, to philosophy, meditation, and history! Alignment and anatomy were particularly informative lessons that were applied to our own bodies and others.   I leave here excited to teach and to deepen my own practice, as I mindfully study how the teachings benefit and transform my life for the better. I really felt that the price, the schedule, the material, the environment, and the exceptionally wonderful instructors were definitely worth my time, money, and energy.  I also highly recommend the Costa Rica retreat location, it was stunning. If you are considering sign up for a YTT with Soma - here's my advice - JUST DO IT!"

-Lauren Kvasnicka, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"This 200 hour training exceeded my expectations in so many ways. Words can’t even explain. Peggy and Liz, our instructors complemented each other so beautifully in their teaching styles and personality. They created a positive community environment and set the stage for a loving place to learn. My understanding greatly increased in the yoga poses, therapeutic side of yoga, and how to keep the body safe for a lifetime of practice. I loved the Yoga Sutra presentations, walking meditations, and inversion day was amazing. I am now feeling more confident that I can teach my students good alignment. I’m so grateful for the teachers, they have impacted me in ways I didn’t know I could be impacted. They showed me what the love of Yoga does, and the transformation it has on lives. It shines through everything they do. Thank you so much for giving us a skill that will change lives. I want to share with others what you gave me - confidence and joy.!"

-Jennifer Lancaster, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"When I signed up for this 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training I didn’t think I would want to step into teaching but now, without a doubt, I will. We built a beautiful community. I never felt pressure to conform or change. The energy of both of our teachers, Liz and Jess, was different but complementary to each other and I thank them very much for being so encouraging and open. I loved learning about alignment, chair yoga, chakra meditation, senior yoga, sequencing and all the skills. The location of Salvatierra in Costa Rica was phenomenal and exceeded my expectations - the beach, the pool, the staff, everything. I am so grateful to take what I have learned forward to support my practice."

-Geaorgie Weare, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"This yoga immersion was exactly the kind of education I longed for on this journey. Right now, I feel myself softening in the heart, open to all possibilities, yet gentle with my expectations. I also feel more confident than ever in my ability to guide movement in all forms. I loved the variety and depth of this program’s curriculum, the range of knowledge our teachers, Liz and Alison, and the authenticity of their offerings. I relished the balance of discipline and freedom and the time for self-study. I cannot wait to recommend and return to Soma Yoga Institute. I have so much gratitude for our teachers and I’m so grateful I found my way to Soma Yoga Institute."

-Jeanine McCain, Costa Rica Yoga Teacher Training Graduate

"This yoga teacher training program has brought me so much joy and deepened my love of Yoga. There was an amazing balance with instruction, practice, self-study and practice teaching. The classes were well balanced and interesting. The Costa Rica location is beautiful and peaceful and I love the many opportunities to enjoy the beach, the pool, and the afternoon smoothies. I came here only to deepen my practice and I’m leaving with a confidence to consider teaching in some capacity. I feel grateful. 100% absolutely recommend."
